There Will Be Blood: "I'm Finished"

Throughout the entirety of There Will Be Blood, the story is seen through Daniel Plainview's perspective. Through this, we are able to see Daniel's true character; a self absorbed, reclusive, and manipulative businessman. Daniel's selfishness prevents him from opening up and becoming close with really any of the characters in the film. He even says in his own words that he hates people. The only characters he is ever "friends" with are the man the he thought was his brother, Henry, and his own son, HW. Daniel eventually becomes very close with his "brother," Henry, but later throws away their friendship and kills him when he finds out that he was lying. Later on in the film, when Daniel has reached his peak status in personal wealth, Daniel essentially disowns HW when he wants to start his own company. He cuts off his relationship with the person he loved the most. After Daniel has been consumed by alcoholism and isolation at the end of the film, he is confronted by the only person he has yet to cut his ties with, Eli Sunday. Although depicted as his main enemy, Eli is the only person who ever truly understands Daniel. The two are essentially doppelgangers; both out for personal gain and will stop at almost nothing to get it. Daniel manipulates people in order to achieve success with his oil business, and Eli manipulates christians into believe he is a holy man. Eli is Daniel's only chance at friendship, and he murders him. After the fight is over, and Eli lies dead on the ground, Daniel delivers the bold statement of "I'm finished," to his butler. He could not have chosen more perfect words, as he had just finished cutting himself off from any who has offered him any sort of companionship.
